The Science That Champions Our Skin Therapists at MizHitch
Beyond the surface. Beyond the treatment.
Understanding skin is a science. Caring for it is our profession.
The skin is the body’s largest organ. Complex, intelligent and constantly adapting, it performs essential functions in protection, sensation, immune defence, temperature regulation and maintaining the body’s internal balance.
Its appearance and behaviour are influenced by far more than the products we apply or the treatments we receive.
Behind professional skin therapy lies an extensive field of knowledge encompassing anatomy, physiology, cellular biology, skin barrier function, inflammation, pigmentation, microbiology, wound healing and the processes associated with ageing.
At MizHitch CosMedi Retreat in Gladstone, Queensland, we believe that understanding this science is fundamental to delivering thoughtful, individualised skin care.
Because exceptional skin therapy begins long before the treatment. It begins with understanding.

The education behind professional skin therapy
Professional skin therapy is a specialised discipline requiring practical skills supported by an understanding of skin structure, function and behaviour.
Education within the beauty, skin and dermal therapy professions varies according to qualification level, training provider and area of specialisation. It may encompass foundational beauty therapy through to advanced dermal science and university-level study.
Depending on their education and scope of practice, skin professionals may study:
Skin anatomy and physiology: The structure and function of the epidermis, dermis and underlying tissues, including the processes involved in skin renewal.
Cellular biology: How skin cells develop, communicate, differentiate and respond to internal and external influences.
Skin barrier function: The importance of the stratum corneum, epidermal lipids, hydration and maintaining skin integrity.
The skin microbiome: The microorganisms that inhabit our skin and their relationship with skin health.
Inflammation and immune responses: How the skin responds to irritation, injury, environmental stressors and inflammatory conditions.
Pigmentation pathways: Melanocyte activity, melanin production and factors contributing to uneven skin tone.
Wound healing and tissue repair: The biological processes involved in skin recovery, collagen remodelling and scar formation.
Skin ageing and oxidative stress: The influence of intrinsic ageing, ultraviolet exposure, environmental factors and cellular processes.
Cosmetic ingredients and treatment technologies: How topical formulations and appropriate non-medical modalities interact with the skin.
This knowledge provides a foundation for understanding not only what is happening on the skin’s surface, but also the biological processes that may be contributing to its appearance and behaviour.
A treatment is a procedure. Understanding when, why and how to use it is where professional education becomes invaluable.
⸻
Skin does not exist in isolation
Skin health is influenced by a complex relationship between genetics, environment, physiology and everyday life.
Hormonal changes, sleep, stress, nutrition, medications, sun exposure, occupational conditions and skincare habits may all influence how the skin behaves and responds to treatment.
Emerging and established research continues to explore relationships between the skin, nervous system, immune system and gastrointestinal microbiome.
These relationships are often described as the skin–brain axis and gut–skin axis.
They highlight the importance of considering the individual as a whole rather than viewing the skin as an isolated surface.
For professional skin therapists, understanding these influences helps inform consultation, identify potential treatment considerations and recognise when medical assessment may be appropriate.
It does not mean that skin therapists diagnose or treat underlying medical conditions. Rather, it encourages a more thoughtful and informed approach to supporting skin health.
Healthy skin is influenced by how we live, what we experience and how we care for it.
⸻
A Collaborative Approach to Skin Health
At MizHitch, we recognise the value of working alongside other appropriately qualified professionals when a client’s needs extend beyond cosmetic skin therapy.
We maintain reciprocal referral relationships with naturopathic practitioners, recognising that nutrition, lifestyle and broader wellbeing considerations can form part of a client’s skin health journey. We similarly maintain professional relationships with general practitioners, recognising their essential role in medical assessment.
Where appropriate, we may encourage clients to seek additional guidance from a naturopath or general practitioners, just as these professionals may refer clients to MizHitch for specialised skin assessment and professional skin treatments and ongoing skin management.
These relationships reflect our belief that thoughtful skin care benefits from professional collaboration, clear boundaries and an appreciation of the many factors influencing skin health. Diagnosis and management of underlying health conditions that may influence skin health, treatment suitability and recovery for a person is the goal.
Our role is not to provide every answer, but to recognise when another professional’s expertise may contribute to a more informed approach to care.
⸻
Why professional skin education matters to you
Two people may present with similar-looking skin concerns but require very different approaches.
Visible redness, for example, may be associated with barrier impairment, irritation, inflammatory skin conditions or other causes requiring different management.
Likewise, not every pigmentation concern is appropriate for a cosmetic peel or light-based treatment.
An appropriately trained skin therapist understands the importance of evaluating treatment suitability, considering contraindications and recognising the limitations of cosmetic procedures.
This may mean prioritising barrier support before introducing more intensive treatments, adjusting treatment intervals, modifying homecare or recommending medical assessment before proceeding.
At times, the most appropriate professional decision is not to perform a treatment.
Effective skin management is not simply about how much we can do. It is about understanding what is appropriate for the skin in front of us.
⸻
Skin therapists, registered nurses and medical practitioners: understanding the difference
The beauty, dermal therapy, nursing and medical professions each bring valuable but distinct knowledge and responsibilities to skin care.
A professional title alone does not establish a person’s expertise in every cosmetic skin treatment. Relevant education, practical experience, competency, professional scope and the nature of the concern all matter.
Beauty Therapists are trained in beauty treatments, skincare, client consultation, hygiene and cosmetic procedures. Their knowledge and practical competencies vary according to their qualifications ranging from Certificates to Diploma, experience and additional professional training.
Skin & Dermal Therapists focus on skin health, skin function and non-medical skin management. Depending on their qualifications and specialised education with Diploma credentials, their expertise may include skin physiology, barrier function, cometic skin concerns, advanced treatment technologies and personalised skin planning.
Dermal Clinicians typically have university-level education in dermal science, providing advanced knowledge of skin anatomy, physiology, dermatological conditions, would healing and evidence-informed dermal treatments. Their clinical competencies depend on their qualifications, training and professional scope.
Naturopaths practise a healthcare discipline that considers nutrition, lifestyle, health history and broader influences on wellbeing. Depending on their qualifications and training, naturopaths may provide dietary and lifestyle guidance and explore factors that can influence skin health, including nutritional adequacy, digestive health, stress and everyday habits.
Registered Nurses are regulated healthcare professionals whose nursing education and additional training may support clinical and aesthetic practice within their professional scope and applicable requirements.
Nurse Practitioners are experienced registered nurses with advanced Master’s=level education and formal endorsement to practise at an advanced clinical level.
General practitioners provide medical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases, including prescriptions and referrals where appropriate.
Dermatologists are specialist medical practitioners with extensive training in diagnosing and treating diseases of the skin, hair and nails.
These professions are not interchangeable, nor should they be viewed as competitors.
For instance, a client seeking professional skincare advice, non-medical skin rejuvenation or management of suitable cosmetic concerns may benefit greatly from the expertise of a qualified skin therapist.
However a client with a suspicious lesion, an undiagnosed skin disease, a complex medical concern or a condition requiring prescription treatment should seek appropriate and relevant medical care.
The most important question is not simply which professional title someone holds. It is whether that professional has the appropriate education, competence and scope to address the individual’s particular needs.
